Yitzhak Navon Figurine
Yitzhak Navon (1921-2015) | Diplomat, playwright, educator and the 5th president of the State of Israel. Born in Jerusalem, studied Islamic education and culture. He served as a diplomat at the Uruguayan embassy, and upon his return was appointed the political secretary of Foreign Minister Moshe Sharet. At the end of 1952 he began managing the office of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. In 1965, he was elected as a Knesset member, served as chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and was engaged in writing and plays ("Bostan Sephardi"). As president (1978), he strove to mediate between the different ethnic groups and sectors in Israel. In 1984, he was elected to the Knesset for a second time, served as Minister of Education and Culture, founded the "Culture Basket" enterprise and introduced compulsory Arabic studies in state schools.
